Idea launches own 3G Network in Kolkata: Idea Cellular, the telecom arm of Indian business conglomerate Aditya Birla group, launched its own 3G network in Kolkata on Thursday. With this launch company has expanded its third-generation services coverage to 13 markets.
In the last spectrum sale conducted by the government of India, the country’s number third telecom service provider in terms of subscribers had won 3G airwaves in the 2,100 MHz band in Kolkata in March 2015.
Idea Cellular Rolls out its own 3G Network in Kolkata:
“The company would invest roughly Rs 300 Crore in the 3G network expansion in Kolkata over the next nine months, with a target of 2,500-odd base stations”, said Anish Roy, Idea Cellular’s chief operating officer (east).
Before Kolkata, Ideal rolled out its own 3G network in the capital city of Delhi, although it is using airwaves in the premium 900 MHz band to do so in the national capital.
Huawei, China’s biggest telecom equipment maker will be the vendor for Idea’s 3G rollout in Kolkata for supplying network gear. As of now, in agreement with British telecom giant Vodafone India for intra-circle roaming (ICR), Idea had been offering 3G services in Kolkata.
This service of 3G-ICR with Vodafone will continue for some time as Idea will be rolling out its services in a phased manner. Roy said, “the ICR with Vodafone would continue for a while till customers migrate to Idea’s own 3G network. This process, however, will take a while since Idea expects to put up its first 1,300-odd 3G sites in Kolkata only by April 2016.”
Idea Cellular’s chief operating officer (corporate) Lakshminarayan expects the latest 3G launch “to drive data usage amongst existing users and further strengthen brand pull”.
Idea has 2 million active mobile subscriber base in Kolkata, of which roughly 20% comprise of data users.
