They were demanding that the animal rights group called PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) be banned. This was the same group who appealed that the sport that is played during a festival of Pongal be banned. This is because the sport involved cruelty towards animals.

In the year 2014 the game in which they tame bulls was banned by the Supreme Court as it amounts to cruelty towards animals. However, last year many filed petitions in the court that during the festival of Pongal the sport must be allowed to play. The court’s judgment was not at the time of Pongal. The protesters kept saying: “Chinnamma Chinamma, OPS enge ma?” which means where is Sasikala Natarajan and O Panneerselvam?” They also reportedly shouted, “PETA varigai, Jallikattu vendum” which means Ban PETA, we want Jallikattu.

Meanwhile, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu O Paneerselvam has taken it up with the Prime Minister to revoke the ban. The AIADMK chief and CM urged the PM to pass an ordinance to revoke the ban on the bull-taming sport which is played during Pongal. As of now, the government may not be able to do much as the matter is sub-judice. Ever since then people have been protesting while there were a few who even organized the sport and played it. However soon around 200 people were detailed and a few were arrested during the last week. Even the protests led to a few arrests.

Even famous celebs including the veteran star Kamal Hassan, actor Vijay, Suriya, cricketer Ashwin Ravichandran, Singer Chinmayi Sripaada and even cricketer Virender Sehwag stood by the people. The celebrities, however, asked the people of Tamil Nadu to keep the peace during the protests.
