Chennai: Cops have held a state-wide operation in which eight persons were arrested who are involved in smuggling of gold. 5.9 kg gold was smuggled by the so-called smugglers in the form of cutting pliers. Police have seized the gold worth Rs 1.8 crore from in Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu.

The gold plier’s handles were made of pure gold and smugglers were found carrying them. DRI in a statement said that “In simultaneous operations in different cities in Tamil Nadu, we busted a gold smuggling syndicate and recovered 5.9 kg gold.  Smugglers were bringing in bars and jewellery smuggled from Dubai and Singapore.  Four persons have been arrested in Chennai.’

As per the intelligence reports, special teams of DRI officers were deployed at airports in Chennai, Tiruchy and Madurai along with on highways.  On Friday morning, a car at Chengalpet was stopped in which the travellers revealed that gold bars were safely kept under the front seat of the vehicle.

In the investigation of the DRI, two persons travelling in a Swift Desire Car revealed that the gold bars were smuggled via Tiruchy airport and that they have received gold from various passengers who have arrived from Singapore and Dubai.

Later, when the officials went on to conduct detailed search of the car, they were shocked to found that the gold is used as handles for cutting pliers.  Eight cutting pliers were found in the car and on taking off the covers of the handles, thick gold rods were present.  Along with that, some jewels were also found which were neatly packed in packets.

The officials went on and conducted a search at a house in Chennai where they found crude gold bars and gold jewellery, which were also seized and two others were taken into custody. Later, DRI also captured another pair of cutting pliers with gold handle from a passenger who arrived in Dubai.  DRI informed that eight persons were taken into custody and that the smuggled gold was recovered from them.
